Trust

We are all very trusting people. I mean, at any time, someone could just make a suicidal turn in a car on the highway and kill dozens of people, or a pilot could randomly decide  to plunge from 30 000 feet in a death spiral for the hell of it, or an officer could open fire on civilians downtown. Yet, we choose to trust in our fellow humans to preserve life and not be stupid, suicidal maniacs.

Why? It’s because we’re stupid, suicidal maniacs.

Challenge: talk to the person flying the next plane you’re on. Look the next police man you see in the eye and smile and say “Thank you.” See if they reply. Do a double take on that new guy in school; check for scars or other less noticeable giveaways. No, it’s not paranoia. It’s caution.
